Feejee experience....the first day....

Today we start our tour with feejee experience :) we didnt really no what to expect but we were excited....they turned up to pick us up and we got a good size blue bus and trailer for luggage with feejee experience on the side! The driver and our guide were very nice and chatty, we boarded and then set off to collect others....there was 9 of us altogether, and quite a nice group of people :) once we were all on board we spent around 20 minutes all chatting and getting all the info from our guide....his name was "cam" and he was lovely :) he was making jokes every other sentance and it was a relief to be in the company of such nice people for a change!
....our bus :)

We stopped first in nadi town where we all stocked up on water, snacks etc and it was here we had our first tiny bit of free wifi in a large tourist store! So we very quickly updated the world and then it was time to head off to our first stop "a traditional fijian village" we were given a free sarong....a lovely blue one with fiji experience written on it, it was compulsary to wear these at certain places in fiji as a sign of respect....
....spot luke wearing his sarong!

We were shown around the village and given some really interesting information, it was great to see all the tradiational fijian living arrangements!....
....this was there kitchen !
....me and luke in front of the chiefs house!

After our village visit we contiued onto a lovely beach where we would have a bbq lunch! This beach looked like paradise ....
....so pretty :)

This beach had lovely blue sea that was as hot as a hot bath! And gorgeous sand and it just looked like a slice of paradise :) we both had a lovely swim and even saw some fish swimming around us :) the guide and driver cooked our bbq there was chicken, sausages and fish, the fish was wahoo! And it was scrummy!  with potato salad and salad! It was scrummy the fish was gorgeous :) when we loaded our plates up i asked where the cutlery was and cam said you eat with your hands! And i thought it was another joke so i asked if he was joking about 4 times and said theres no way i am doing that! There was potato salad with mayo on it! That would have been really messy! Any way he found me a fork thank god!

After lunch there was some drinking going on! Everyone had bought some booze at the supermarket it was dirt cheap and two of the girls had bought a 58% alcohol bottle of rum! I opted out to try but luke got stuck in!....
....this is there local rum!

I settled for my nice fruity vodka! Luke went back for a dip in the ocean after that!

We all packed up and got back on the bus and made our way to the next stop....sand dunes! Now i am not a fan of sand so i was quite happy with catching some snaps of luke ! And when we arrived to the sand dunes they were so so steep....
....it was a long way down!

Luke had great fun on these ! He went down about 6 times and even built a ramp with one of the other guys! However that didnt really go to plan as the first guy missed the ramp and then luke went straight through the ramp! It was really funny i got some great pics :) he also had a race with one of the other guys....
....which he won!!

....this is luke going through the ramp!!

It was such fun watching them all! That was our last excursion of the day it was now time to make our way to the resort...."mango bay resort" we all needed a shower by this time and were pleased when we got to the resort and were able to wash and chill for a bit. We had already pre booked private rooms for the whole of our trip so we had a "garden bure" which is a hut in the garden and a very common form of accomodation in fiji....
....this is our bure!

Our bure was huge inside with its own bathhroom, a fan and mozzie net! It was good and a different experience to what we had had before! And we were actually so tired we didnt really care about our surroundings!

That night we enjoyed a group dinner....and as a group took part in a trivia quiz....which we won! We won a jug of cocktail ! It was very tasty! We were then introduced to the kava ceremony! Kava is a root plant and originated in fiji....it is used for many things but one of its main propertys is it makes people relaxed and calm, they also use it here for pregnant woman as a Pain relief! You empty the kava contents....which is like little pieces of herbs.....into a bowl of water and mix it.....this is all done by the fijian carrying out the ceremony.....he chants and we all have to clap before we drink it and when others drink it! It was quite an experience! We were given a cup full each.....it tasted like dirt! It wasnt to pleasant! But almost immediately we had numb tongues! It didnt last for ages! It was good to experience it and it was great to see something cultural !

We had a early night, tomorrow we had a early start we were being taken to our next resort "the beachouse" this is a hop on hop off tour and we had chosen to hop off at this resort! We had a month here so had loads of time to finish our tour....we were a little sad to be leaving our group tho....it had been a fun day and evening with a great crowd of people :)

....our group photo and first meal on our tour :)

Fiji.....so far we are in love with you :)

Our journey to fiji....

So as many of you will now know we were not keen on australia so fiji could not come quicker! On the day we actually left sydney to catch our plane it was all very surreal! We was pleased as we had managed to get our luggage weight down to the correct amount with 6kg to spare! So we were more chilled and very relieved :) we had 2 flights to catch to get to fiji both with air new zealand of course its always a worry that your bag will not make it onto your connecting flight! But we just stayed positive. Sydney airport had free wifi so we took this chance to update the world......via facebook! And tell everyone we were off! My parents had been away on holiday we hadnt spoke to them for 2 weeks :( and now we were off to fiji we didnt no when we would next chat to them :( but i sent them a whats app message to update them :) we couldnt wait to here about there cruise ! they had been to see the northern lights :) we had been sending them pics and videos keeping them updated while they were away so on there return they will be inundated with messages!

We kept waiting for announcements of our flight but nothing happened.....we made our way to the gate of our own accord as we didnt want to miss the flight! We waited and waited and waited.......it was now ten minutes before our flight was due to take off and we were getting slightly concerned as we had a connecting flight to catch! And the time between flights was only 1hr 15 minutes! We were finally called for boarding! We had a lovely pair of seats by the window which i had arranged a couple of months before via email! And before we knew it we were off! And as we began our climb into the sky we had a lovely view of sydney city including the opera house :) i was so pleased as flying into sydney we had sat on the wrong side of he plane for the view! I managed to get a sneaky pic on my phone!....

For some reason i felt anxious on this flight....infact i had been feeeling more and more anxious flying as time went on and the more flights we did the more anxious i got, it really irritated me actually as i do suffer with anxiety and before me & luke became a couple i had it quite bad all the time but since being with luke i havnt really suffered with any bad episodes! However flying seemed to be setting it off ever so sligtly! i didnt feel terribly ill like i used to but i definately felt on edge, anxiety is such a horrible thing to have and unless you have it you dont really understand how shit it can make you feel! And i was annoyed with myself that i was now starting to get anxious over flying! It wont ever stop me going on holiday but i dont want to feel rough everytime we go!

It was a good flight anyway a little terbulance at the start but good, the food wasnt to nice though. There were two films we wanted to watch frozen and 12 years a slave, we decided to watch 12 years a slave first and frozen on the next flight! It was a true story and was very sad but a bloody good film! It was on for a long time so when it had finished we were getting ready to land! Perfect i get to get off this plane for a bit! As we came into auckland airport the view of new zealand was stunning and i kinda wish we was hopping off here for a bit! And we got another good view of the city :) We did land about 30 minutes late so it was a bit of a rush to get to our next gate! With cheeky stop at duty free to get a "real" bar of chocolate! A toblerone! And it was scrummy :) of course we didnt eat the whole thing it was very sickly!

Onto our next flight auckland-nadi :) this flight was good, it was a smaller plane so slightly less leg room :( we got comfy and watched frozen......and i have to say there was a bit to much singing for us!! We enjoyed the film every disney film is good:) but everytime it got into the story somebody burst into song! I no that all disney films have singing but it was like every 7 minutes throughout the whole film! Anyway we enjoyed it :) and while we were watching it we got served the tastiest dinner we had ever had on a flight ...... Gnocci with butter beans and mushrooms! It was so nice :) i felt less anxious on this flight :) and as we made our way down to the airport for landing it was sunset and the view was stunning the sky was just so bright with beautiful colours :) we got off the plane the first thing to hit us was the heat! Even at 6.30pm it was 30 degrees! We made our way to passport control and as we did we were greeted by a group of fijian people singing to us :) it was a really good welcome to fiji :) we felt good :)
.....coming into fiji was so pretty
....and the sunset on arrival was must beautiful

We collected our baggage.....mine being one of the last few! Litrally! We were getting worried about it! But all the luggage made it and in one piece!

We had booked a tour with fiji experience so made our way to there office :) on the way collecting a shell necklace for free :) we picked up our tickets and were given a driver to take us to our starting hotel....nadi bay resort.

When we arrived to our resort we were pleased....it was so laid back, we had a lovely greeting & when we were taken to our room there was 2 fijian guys singing by the restaurant ! Our room was big with seperate bathroom & had a kettle & fridge! Perfect for our first night in fiji! We went to the bar and had a nice cold drink & ordered a pizza to share it was a great first night.....tomorrow we were going to start our tour with feejee experience & we couldnt wait!

Sydney....the second time around :)

We were so looking forward to getting back to sydney :) we loved it there and it will be nice to end the australia part of our world tour in a good place.

This time round we were staying at sydney central yha....
....it was more like a hotel!

This hostel was great it was more like a hotel then a Hostel! And had a great sauna and swimming pool on the top floor with a great view :) we were staying in a four bed dorm. It was fine snd had loads of room and huge lockers!

The first night we arrived we went straight to darling harbour for one of the best vegi burgers we have ever tasted from a place called "wishbone!" It had a vegi patty, lettuce, tomato, avocado, cheese and sweet chilli sauce and home made mayo! It was so scrummy :) we had a great evening just chilling at darling harbour :)
....it was a lovely evening :)

We had a earlyish night ready for exploring tomorrow!

The next day we decided to just walk....and we walked all over sydney and we found a lindt chocolate cafe! Lukes fave chocolate .....
.....of course he had a hot chocolate ! It was rude not to really!

We continued our walk and we ended up opposite the opera house :)

We asked a couple from asia walking past to take our pic with the opera house in the background....they took loads we were excited to be having all these great pics with the opera house behind us......these were the pics we got.....
....seriously what sort of pics are these!

We walked around the small parks opposite it and got a great view of the sydney bridge aswell....
....it was a great view.

It was a great first full day we really enjoyed our stroll around sydney :) that evening we went to darling harbour for a fireworks display it was really good and looked lovely over the city, this nice we also gad our second vegi burger!

The next day we decided to walk around hyde park and the botanical gardens.....it was a beautiful day and during the day we walked to the anzac building, the fountain in hyde park, a beautiful church, and then onto the botanical gardens which were beautiful.....
....in hyde park

....the beautiful church :)

We had noticed that all around the city was models of rhinos and it was pieces of art work that were put there to help save the rhinos it was a really good idea... And they were really pretty....

We walked all the way round to opposite the opera house on the other side from yesterday! And it gave us a stunning view of the opera house with the bridge in the background!
....we got some really good pics here :)

....love this pic with the city in the background :)

Unfortunately the next day which was our last full day in sydney, it was raining and hard! So we couldnt really do a lot! We had some stuff to send home again!! As our luggage was over weight as you read before on our last flight! So we had to be really ruthless! We hadn't brought anything new apart from sleeping bags and pair of shorts but we decided it was down to the stuff we were carrying in our day bags that now had to be put in our suitcase! Anyway we decided to send back my trainers as i had walking shoes that i needed to keep with me and that i wore all the time so they had to go home, we also sent back a few clothes, our waterproof trousers and a few souvenirs it weighed 3.5kg! And was only about £25 to send by sea so wasnt to bad! So we sent that and then used the wifi in the shopping center and then it was time to go back and pack our bags ready for fiji, after a while packing we finally got the weight right and ended up this time with 6kg to spare so worth sending stuff home and throwing loads of clothes away we lost 6kg! We was pleased and it was a relief!

We got dominos that night for dinner as it was cheap night and got chatting to a nice lady who proceded to inform me of all the places i could write to to complain about a few of the hostels we have stayed in! It was very interesting! Anyway we tried to have an ealry night but as per usual i was still awake at 2.30am we had to get up at 5.30! But that seems to be normal for the day before we travel ! We was so excited to get to fiji.

We thoroughly enjoyed sydney our last stop in australia....we are just in love with the city :) it really is our fave place in oz and although we didnt do a lot in our weekend there we had a great time just walking around the city and seeing things that we didnt see last time we was there, we got some great pics, and was pleased to end our tour in oz in a great city :) but we were so excited to get to fiji :) and was ready to move on.

New Zealand vs australia ......the question everyone asks us!

Before we left for this trip a lot of people kept saying "it will be interesting what you think of New Zealand and Australia " and since we have been to New Zealand the new question is "which one do you prefer" so for us the answer is .... hands down ......NEW ZEALAND!

And here's why.........

We are at the end of our australia tour and quite frankly our thoughts on australia are as follows......WE'VE HAD ENOUGH!! I wanted to start writing this blog post half way through our oz tour but thought that would be unfair to oz so waited and we are now in sydney at the end so i think its a fair comparison now ! I have been putting this post together for a couple of weeks now and adding things as we go!....I will be catorgorising our comparison list....

First thoughts....

Arriving in auckland was a relief after being in asia ! We were staying in a little town just outside of the city and we felt safe, relax and excited & couldnt wait to explore. Our hostel was lovely & everyone was really friendly, & we got free wifi.

When we arrived at sydney we got the train to central station it was rather busy as we were in the city we expected that! we arrived to our hostel the man in reception was rude to us and we found out we dont get free Wifi as yha members :( (which we did in new zealand!) & also at this point found out that there isnt really any free wifi in oz altogether :( however we went out & explored & we liked it, we felt safe & relaxed.

Mode of transport & travelling....

The kiwi experience bus....what a lump of s**t! It barely moved, it could barely get up the hills and it wasnt very comfy....the bus also broke down several times! Making many people miss out on the tours they had booked! As everything was on such a tight schedule!....however....the views when travelling from place to place were absolutely breathtaking the kind of views where you just dont want to look away incase you miss something! They were just like a backdrop from a film.....it is something we will remember for years to come & loved it.

The greyhound buses....these were new, comfy, plenty of room, had usb ports to charge your phone etc, some even had wifi! They never broke down and they were quick! ....however....there was absolutely nothing to look at, at all at any point of any of our journeys! It was just miles and miles of land with the odd house here and there....we did an east coast tour so we presumed the journey would be beside the coast and we would have a lovely view to look at....we were wrong! It made the long journeys so so boring.

What we thought it would be like.....the reality!....

We didnt really have a lot of thoughts on new zealand before we went there we just thought it would be beautiful and we had read it was the adrenaline capital of the world, you dont really read or see a lot on new zealand its not the sort of place you go into thomas cook and ask for a holiday there! Its the sort of place you know nothing about until you go there!.....the reality....we were shocked from the moment we got to new zealand of the pure beauty of it....every corner we turned there was something beautiful to look at....we were just constantly amazed....we saw things that we may not ever see again....franz josef glacier....the beautiful reflections on lake mathieson....everyday brought something new and beautiful...and we loved it.....it was definately a bit of us, the reality was fare better then what we thought.

I think that most people have the same assumptions of australia.....white sand & clear blue seas = beautiful beaches! And thats exactly the thought we had before we came here....you see pics in england of oz and it looks like paradise and we are all led to believe that is what its like!....Well i am here to tell you that is not reality! Murky water is reality! Not being able to swim in the sea due to jellyfish thats reality! The weather being so unpredictable that going to the beach is most of the time not an option....we were just shocked we were expecting 3 months in paradise and what we got was 3 months in a glorified spain! The bits that apparently beautiful are whitsundays, fraser island and all the places you pay stupid money to visit your paying to see beauty! When we thought it would be beautiful everywhere.

The natives....

Both new zealand and australia have natives...new zealand has maori's and australia has aborigines....

The younger maoris inpeticular seem to walk around with a chip on there shoulder and fight/argue in the street and are disrespectful ....however a Lot of these are teenagers so some of this behaviour could be the teenage tendencies nowadays! The older maori's seemed to be ok, less intimidating and kept themselves to themselves. There was never huge groups of maori's drinking, arguing with each other and being disrespectful, although we found them to be a bit intimidating at times i think this was due to us never really encounted natives like this and not being use to it! But there was maori shows etc where maori's where willing to show and teach members of the public and tourists about there culture and history. So all in all the maori's where more interesting then intimidating.

The aborigines in australia were very different....there were always huge groups of them everywhere especially in the touristy areas....drinking and a lot of the time they were arguing and fighting with each other, a lot of aborigines were drunks and falling about all over the street. There were many crimes on The News while we were there and i am sadden to say that the majority of these crimes were committed by the aborignes. They were extremely intimidating and you really felt you couldnt walk past them with out thinking something bad was going to happen. We saw a few protests whilst we were There where the aborigines were protesting because they wanted there land back.....it seemed that they didnt want to share it with the others and they were not living peacefully whereas in new zealand the maoris lived quite happily with everyone else! At times we really did feel unsafe and it wasnt very nice.

Saying all of this....we can only speak for the things we saw in the towns we visited, things may be different in other parts and others may have a different opinion or experience this is just ours.

The hostel staff....

As our trip is so long we are staying in many hostels and we never knew what to expect i think to be fair we expected the worst from all of them but we have been pleasantly surprised by most of them :) however what i want to talk about here is the staff!

In new zealand we stayed in hostels the whole time and they were mostly very nice and the staff were amazing & really kind, helpful and always gave you lots of info on the area you were in and most importantly they were approachable and treated you with respect. Australia however was a whole different kettle of fish....we stayed in only a handful of good hostels and found the staff in most of the hostels to be rude, arrogant and grumpy! They didnt want to give you any info unless you were thinking about booking something with them, which was a rip off on its own! Most of the nomads hostels were run by young adults some teenagers and all of these hostels had members of staff that were really rude to us and to many others, they dont have any experience in customer service and they dont care! Most hostels have the reputation that people go there to meet other "like minded" people" but not everyone is like the average traveller (talk more on this later!) there are Couples, older people and people that dont want to party all night because they want to get up and sight see the next day, but it seems if you are not like the "average traveller" most hostels in australia dont want to no!

The accomodation....

We stayed in all hostels in new zealand and we decided that the general standards were good, considering they were hostels! And we dont like to slum it! These were our first taste of hostels & we expected bad & we got good! There were many more perks in hostels in new zealand then oz.....for example .....free wifi, ovens, really helpful and polite staff, they were cheaper and they were all closer to everything....tourists attractions etc! And they all had clean & good standard kitchens! Which is a must for us! The thing that made them better then the ones in oz were the staff mainly they were so helpful and kind, and even the staff that lived in the hostels and worked for accomodation were friendly and always chatted to you and many of them even made cakes aswell for the hostel! Just the small things can really make a difference.

Australian hostels were a shock for us, I suppose this is what hostels are really like And this is what we expected in new zealand but going to new zealand first set the bar pretty high for oz! And unfortunately Oz hostels were generally unclean, the kitchens were tiny with not enough room, storage or cooking space for everyone! The staff were rude! And unhelpful, you always had to pay for wifi apart from about 4 hostels! And they were expensive!

We can count on one hand the good hostels and ones we enjoyed in australia where as nearly all were good in new zealand, and we have come to the conclusion that the best ones in australia were the family run ones not the chain ones, however sydney harbour yha & brisbane yha were the exception they were amazing! More like hotels. I think that australia's east coast is so backpacker orientated that the quality is forgotten in everything, its like they cant be bothered as there is so many backpackers giving them business, its very sad its like that.

We have found with both countrys that its the smaller hostels that offer more for your money and more for free to backpackers and these ones seem to be the excellent ones.

The cost's....

Although people had told us oz was expensive nothing could have prepared us for the expense it would cost us, and the fact that we werent really enjoying our time there made the expense feel like the end of the world! However obviously the cost of things isnt really a reflection on the country as every country's expenses are different this is just a comparison from us adding to our conclusion!

New zealand was relatively cheap, accomodation was a fair price, food and takeaways were cheap and clothing etc was cheap and we budgetted quite well we probably could of done with a extra £300 towards the end but other then that it wasnt to bad.

Australia was a big shock! Accomodation was slightly more expensive then new zealand with double rooms being stupid money! We only stayed in these if they were only a few dollers more! The food was expensive especially goodies! Getting a chocolate bar was around $3 ! And poor luke couldnt get any muffins ! He missed them greatly but they were so expensive! Food shopping wasnt to bad still more expensive then england, eating out was completely out of the question! However dominos did two cheap nights $5 pizzas so that was our weekly treat! And the tours and excursions were stupid money ! And really taking the piss out of backpackers.

The tours/excursions....

I will start by saying that tours/excursions in both countrys were expensive. However as we did the kiwi experience in new zealand we got lots of tours included and stopped at lots of places on route on our journey to other places...looking back now it was a good tour it just needed new office staff & buses!  So the things they were offering werent excursions as such they were activities like white water rafting, cultural shows, bungy jumps, sky dives etc etc where as in oz it was all about the tour....there was a tour to go everywhere and they were all expensive ! You couldnt go to any town with out people offering you tours! And it seemed everyone did the same tours everyday, all year & it never changed! It hadnt changed for years! So not only were they expensive there were also so many people on them everyday that it would be hard to get a great experience out of it ! and we wanted to do things that were not so touristy! Looking back now the east coast was clearly the wrong option for us as we didnt do any of the touristy things backpackers come here to do! We got to see a lot of things in new zealand a lot of the country for one price.....the price of our bus ticket it was great ....whereas the oz experience was basically just greyhound transport up the east coast and nothing else! We found that new zealand had loads of free activities that were alternatives to the expensive ones if you couldnt afford it, but oz had no such thing, you had to do these tours for the high price or you missed out! It seemed everything was about tourists and how much money they could get off us, it was odd as new zealands main income as a country is money from tourists so you would think they would be the ones charging for every little thing they could and not doing free activites and definately not offering a great bus pass with added extras like walking tours, scenic stops, national park stops etc etc. australia has lots of different income not just from tourists and they are the ones taking the piss! The weather was unpredictable in both countries so cancelled tours or activities was unfortunately a reality, however in new zealand the company would rebook you and do everything they can so you can still do what you have booked to do, in australia if you booked a whitsundays tour for example ....and they are not cheap!...and the weather was bad it would be cancelled and you do not get a refund at all and because they are so fully booked with all these backpackers you cannot rebook! It really was disgraceful we spoke to many people who had quite litrally lost hundreds of dollers with cancelled tours and there was nothing they could do, one girl was claiming on her insurance but after the excess and converting it you would never get anywhere near the full amount back if any back at all! It just seemed odd that everyone was doing the same things and most of them were then complaining about these things! It was like they followed the crowd and got sucked in and were then spat out and hated it! Like they had no mind of there own! When really they have just paid alot of money to do a short tour that has been miss sold to them! Because they are a backpacker. There are so many people in the street in oz trying to convince you to do there tours etc it was like being on a small holiday island where Restaurants try to suck you into there restaurant to eat there food rather then the one up the road !  We didnt once encounter that in new zealand! Not even in queesntown which is a town that has been built especially for tourism! It just seemed that australia was really taking the piss out of tourists and backpackers and all over things that are NATURAL beauties, things that arnt man made things that were already there, they are making there money over taking people to the islands (where all the NATURAL beauty is!) and touring them! That is all! And unfortunately in our eyes and our experiences that is all the east coast of australia has to offer! And if you are not willing to pay for these tours then travel another part of australia!

Standards and values....

A few things have crossed our Minds whilst thinking about the standards for each country and the differences....when we say standards we are talking about the level of customer service, the standard of hostels and what may or may not be acceptable and the standard and value for money tours available for the averge travelling backpacker.

Both countrys are very aware of global warming and the damage "we" are creating so are very "save the planet" orientated which we love, so there are constant reminders everywhere about using less water, recycling, saving the animals and how we can help etc etc it really is very good i think that the uk needs to adopt some of there standards in relation to this.

Whilst in new zealand the level of customer service was always good, the only bad piece of customer service we recieved was from kiwi experience office staff, everywhere else everyone was really helpful, kind and respectful. Whilst we were there we never felt like they were putting all the backpackers in the same category they understood that all travellers were different and we werent all 18year olds fresh out of school and just wanting to drink and be led by others! The standard of the hostels was on another world compared to australia! All the hostels were clean for a start! and they all had the facilities that you needed as a traveller, it just seemed there standards were higher and they really wanted there hostel to have high standards, even the little things like how much room there was in the hostel for you to move around and put your bag! Its like they understood what its like to be a backpacker and what was important! The tours and activities available in New zealand were expensive and half the time we couldnt understand how half of these backpackers afforded it! However i will say for new zealand that they always offer a free or much cheaper option so you always have something to do :)

Australia unfortunately lacked customer service everywhere :( especially the hostels :( it seemed the people working at the hostel had very little or no training or experience and were not really interested in learning, they were just working for there accomodation and they just wanted to get there working hours out of the way! The standards were much different in regards to kitchen hygiene and cleanliness, although the hostels themselves cannot be solely blamed for kitchen hygiene as the backpackers themselves are dirty disgusting people! (Well....the majority!) and i am sure they must all have servents at home as not many no how to wash and dry up there own plates, cups and cutlery! So that is not the hostels fault! However the "kitchen cleaners" which were also backpackers working for accomodation were so shockingly bad at cleaning the kitchen, with this combined with dirty backpackers it made for a dirty kitchen! The common areas were pretty much the same, and as for "housekeeping" what that title should mean is "bin emptiers!" And the awful thing was this seemed to be acceptable standards of living! All the tours in australia were exactly the same tours to ......whitsundays, fraser island, barrier reef, sky diving, tours to see the wild animals, scuba diving, fishing charters etc etc they were all the same everywhere, all expensive for a backpackers budget, everyone did the same tours month after month year after year and we heard a lot of people complaining about the tours, that they were short, they were cancelled with no refund, they were shit,it was different to what they expected, it wasnt what was advertised the list goes on! We felt that all the backpackers did the same tours to follow the trend and because its "what you come to the east coast for" but most of them did not enjoy it as they were more often then not taken the piss out of by tour companys! Luckily we were not sucked into it! It seemed australia put all backpackers in the same category regardless of age.

Our fellow backpackers....

Since begining our travels we have come to realise that dogs have better hygiene then most of these travellers! And thats no lie! I will sum up as i could write an essay about this topic! It appears that alot of backpackers leave there home country and suddendly become accustom to a way of living that they have never known before.....wearing no shoes... at all anywhere! Not using washing machines to wash there clothes, not washing, eating the wierdest of foods the list goes on! The first thing....wearing no shoes really had us confused as especially people from the uk.....would leave the uk with 3-4 pairs of shoes and then all of sudden walking bare foot is what they choose to do! Its odd as we as a country arnt generally brought up to walk around bare footed! And going food shopping and to the bank just would not be allowed unless you had shoes on! But it seems they have left there home country so all of a sudden they like being bare footed 24 hours a day! And you should of seen the state of their feet! A lot of travellers thought jumping in the pool in there clothes was washing them adequately! I dont need to say any more on that you can imagine what they smelt like! I guess they also thought that jumping in the pool washed them aswell as the smell some of these people created was like nothing i had ever encounted before! And then there was there food habits!....most of these travellers drunk everynight and let me tell you its not cheap to do that! And then for there breakfast lunch and dinner would eat dry bread! Or bread that they have spoon chocolate spread on! It was so odd as we ate for $10 a day and we ate fresh good foods! A lot of them also ate super noodles every day! They surelY couldnt have been eating like this at home?? There was many backpackers that would come into a dorm and think that they own it and its there own room! They would quite litrally empty there backpacks all over the floor and hang stuff everywhere at times you couldnt see the floor! A lot of these people found it ok to chat about football scores until way past 2am! They just didnt have any respect for other people in the room and didnt care. People also have very bad kitchen hygiene habits! Leaving there dirty plates and cutlery all over dorm floors, not cleaning there pots and pans after cooking! Leaving things like yogurts and coke open in the fridge to leak over others things. It really shocked us that people behave like this!

Concluding our comparisons....

A lot of our conclusion is unfortunately negative about australia, this is our experience and views, there has been places and times we have enjoyed in australia and these can be found in earlier posts! it wasnt all terrible! (Luke said "just mostly!") a lot of people may not agree with this comparison that is probly because they followed the leader!! Everyone has a different experience and everyone has different ideas of what they want to do on there travels! I guess we were just not prepared for australia! And take it from us it IS a country you MUST prepare for!! I think its pretty clear we loved new zealand & its the sort of country that suited us very well :) it wasnt perfect as this post explains but it was pretty damn good! And we had a great time there :) all in all a lot of good (and some bad) memories have been made in both countries and we take it all on board as experience.

Parting thoughts....

In hindsight.....we booked a tour for the wrong part of australia, we booked it having had no experience & feel we were given the wrong guidance by our tour operater we know now they put us in the same categorie as the majority of backpackers! Which we are not! I wish we were offered other options, & we should have researched more i think we would of enjoyed another part of australia more, as obviously we picked the east coast and then complained it was touristy! But that is where all the tourists/backpackers go! It would have been nice if our trip was more personalised to us instead of being thrown in with everyone else, we wanted our own induvidual experience of australia & have a story of our own instead of everyone telling the same story of where they have been and what they have seen. The east coast wasnt us at all and even if we had a never ending budget we still wouldnt of done all the touristy thing. New zealand & the kiwi experience was good however there were other more suited options that we didnt know about until we arrived & we wished we had! No one we know has ever done a trip like ours so we went in having done a bit of research & having ideas of what we wanted & put our trust into our tour operater when we could of Infact booked everything ourselves for cheaper & did it all our way. We wouldnt say we regret anything as we are so lucky to be doing this trip its a once in a lifetime experience and we have some great memories its just a case of what we would have done differently......but this is all part of the experience of travelling! No one can guarentee your trip will be amazing you have to make the good memories we had more fun on this trip (so far!) finding our own path on our travels rather then following the crowd. And we are pleased we always stick to our own decision....its our amazing adventure and its definately proving one to remember!

(These are our own thoughts, opinions and experiences, some people will like them others wont! Everybody has different experiences and expectations and everyone is looking for a different adventure, this is for all the people that have asked us "which do you prefer .....new zealand or australia?" And this was our answer! Happy reading!)

The ending point of our east coast tour....cairns!

We arrived in cairns in the early afternoon, first impressions were it looked like a nice town, looked like a normal town!
....getting off the greyhound for the last time!

We got off the greyhound bus for the last time! And i used a payphone for the first time in a few years to call the hostel to come and pick us up, the hostel we was staying at was the one furthest out of town but there was a shuttle to town every hour from early morning to about 3am! And in anycase it was only around a half hour walk! It was nice being out of the town a bit ! Some piece and quiet! We were staying at a nomads we had booked back in december with a money off voucher we got in queenstown! We were a bit nervous about it as we had had bad experiences in oz with nomads hostels but when we arrived it looked ok it wasnt busy and we had booked our own room so even if it was bad we had our own room! Upon checking in we was greeted by the rudist girl on reception who hadnt a clue what she was doing and was clearly being trained she was talking to another member of staff about us as if we werent there ! I was fuming and said something but she just continued to be rude! It was all over a voucher ...we had booked online and she said we needed to print our voucher and give it to her! But we had no internet so we would of had to buy some just to email the voucher to them! I quickly told her we were not doing that! And she was fuming! I think it was because I said no to her she clearly had a attitude problem! Another more experienced member of staff came over and there was no problem at all like i knew there wouldnt be we had had no problems before booking online and not having a print out! But anyway this girl continued to be rude to me through out our stay! Even when she wasnt working! She clearly had never worked with the general public before and had a a bee in her bonet ! She was only working to get free accomodarion at the hostel ! She needed to get down off that pedastal and fast! She is the sort of person that gives hostels a bad name! Anyway we were used to people like that it seemed that the general population of travellers were like that!

We went to our room and it was ok, smelt a bit but that was because it had been empty for a while, we were right next to the bar but on the next floor so thought it would be super noisy but it was fine and there was aircon! Which the recpetion controlled. We got on the shuttle bus to town and went to target for wifi and a cheap chemist to get our last bits for fiji, and then for some food for dinner, luke was going to cook me chilli com carne again :) it was great & it lasted us two days :) anyway we needed to get a pack lunch for a tour we had included in our ticket for monday....atherlon tablelands tour....we decided on roasted veg tortellini with mushroom sauce and brocolli :) our food came to $30 so that was 3 days worth of food for $30 ! We was eating good food and we was only spending $10 per day average! And all our food was fresh :) we headed back had dinner and had a chilled out night! It was a saturday night but the bar wasnt loud at all :) we were pleased :)
....luke cooking me dinner :)

The next day we had a sleep in and then spent The day by the pool catching some rays :) i had a headache by 4pm even tho i had been covering my head up :( so had to go and relax in our dark room for a couple of hours :( and luke very kindly massaged my head and got me some water :)

There was a girl staying here called victoria and it was a girl i went to primary school with! Random! Meeting someone you went to school with half way around the world! So i chatted to her for a while by the pool that was interesting!

We had chilli con carne left so we ate that and luke cooked some sweet potato to go with it and while he did that i cooked the pack lunch for the next day :) we are a good team when we get going, we were used to wanting to get in the hostel kitchen cook as quick as poss and get out ! This kitchen wasnt to bad, it was small and obviously there was flies everywhere! But it was ok! There was a hostel cat called horlicks and he or she was the cutest thing it actually looked like a tom cat it was huge & cuddly ! It might not have been the hostel cat it did look very well looked after and the coat was really soft and well kept! I gave him our left over cheese! He loved it! We chilled out again that evening we had to be up early the next day for our tour, we started sorting our bags out for fiji.

The next day was a bright and early start being collected for our tour at 7.15am, today we were going on a full day tour of atherton tablelands.....i have wrote a seperate blog post on this as it was such a lovely day....we had a great time and returned at 19.30pm knackared!

We had a wonder around town the next day and spent the afternoon by the lagoon on the esplanade it was a huge public pool that overlooked the sea, there was loads of places to sit and there was free wifi  :) .....
....it was a lovely place to spend the afternoon

We also got dominos that night as it was $5 night :) only two more days now and we are off down to sydney :) cant wait :)

The next day it was overcast and not so warm so we went to town again and i had to get some pictures printed to send my nan and we had a look in the kathmandu store as we had recently discovered we needed sleeping bags for our america tour so we were on the hunt for a bargain! You could rent or buy them from the guide but it was $60 american dollers! Which is £36. We found some in kathmandu and they were in the sale! But unfortunately the sale didnt start for the general public until the next day so we would return tomorrow ! It was time to head to target for the internet! And also luke fancied a curry for dinner! So i went to coles to get bits for that, it was a good idea as it would last us 2 days :) It rained so hard that evening non stop! And all night :(

When we woke up the next day it was still absolutely chucking it down :( but we had to go out we had to get the sleeping bags and go to the post office so we braved the weather ! It was awful but we had our raincoats and umbrella! We were in kathmandu quite along time! We are in decisive ! The dilema was there was two sleeping bags we were trying to decide from..... They were both bargains one was $59.99 knocked down from $149.99 and the other was $79.99 knocked down from $200 so thats £32.50 and £43.44! That was a good deal and they were good sleeping bags, the differences were size, weight and the temperature it could with stand, i decided on the cheaper one because it was lighter, smaller and it was all i really needed but luke got the slightly more expensive one becuase it is one that he could use for night fishing at home so killing two birds with one stone really, his sleeping bag at home had gone mouldy and he was going to get one when he got home anyway and would have been paying at least up to £100 for one! So his really was a bargain! I would have got the same one but the size difference and weight difference was to much for us both to have as they wouldnt fit in our bags! Lukes one can withstand lower tempuratures, however we both have sleeping sheets which add 5-10 degrees on the tempurature so our bags would both withstand minus tempuratures! I could also use mine fishing but i wouldnt be going as often as luke especially night fishing so i think we made the right decision, at least it would save us buying them In the usa and at least we had loads to choose from! We were really pleased with our bargain! We headed back later that afternoon for the dreaded task of packing! And it was a night mare it took hours and lukes suitcase was so over weight :( but we couldnt do anything about it i just couldnt be bothered anymore with the stupid packing! We would have to send more stuff back home from sydney to avoid over the limit charges :( and what was so annoying was that the case wasnt even bulging there was so much room in there! And we hadnt boughgt anything new! It made no sense!

After a late and stressful night we proceded to have a shit sleep! But who cares we were off to sydney in the morning!

Off to the airport for 10am our flight was at 11.25 it was with virgin australia, when we checked in the lady said we would have to pay $70 for our over the limit bag i nearly cried on the spot that was £40 :( we both had a 23kg allowance and i thought as long as we wasnt over that combined weight between bags we were ok :( sadly all airlines do it differently :( thank goodness she let us off the charge! I was so pleased :) the flight was ok, we got to see some of the "great barrier reef" on the flight over and i have got to say it didnt look like it did in the pics! But neither does the rest of australia! We were most pleased to be heading back to sydney :)

Verdict of cairns is we enjoyed it here especially our tour we did, the hostel was ok apart from the rude arrogant girl! The town was good, the lagoon was nice, I do feel our judgement was clouded slightly by  the fact we couldnt wait to get out of australia ! We were both stressed about it and it was coming out in our mood :( only a few days until fiji :)

I wont do a verdict on australia as i am doing a comparison of new zealand and australia and as you read it you will see that is our conclusion!

Atherton tablelands day tour....

We had this tour included in our oz experience pass and after some confusion on dates etc we managed to get on the day tour today (17th march) we got collected at 7.15am and proceded to collect the rest of the customers before heading to the tablelands.

This tour we hadnt really researched a lot on....we had read the description that came with our pack and that was about all! It was basically a full day tour.....an actual full day.....like 12 hours! You dont get many of them nowadays! And it was a tour of national parks and beautiful waterfalls in the tablelands area of north queensland! We were excited but didnt want to presume much! Just incase it was crap!

Anyway when everyone was picked up we got on our way, we had two great guides ....josh and jimmy....and the tour bus was awesome.....
...this was suppose to be captian matty! He owned the company!

The first part of the drive was around 1 hour and it was up mountains and windy roads....we stopped on the way up for a picture....
....it was a lovely view

We continued on.... The guides entertained us for the journeys....it was fun!

The first stop was "lake eacham national park" and it was stunning, the lake itself was so beautiful and it had a great reflection of the surrounding rainforest....
....really beautiful

It was here that luke had his first swim I was going to go in but it was only 9.30 and it was a bit chilly for me! However as the day went on I wished I had gone in this lake! But luke had a swim and jumped in from anywhere he could he was very daring :) he jumped in from a tree branch that was very high up....
 .....luke jumping off the tree!
....a star fruit that we tasted! It was yummy

We were given a light breaky here ....tea, hot chocolate, fruit & muffins! Luke was pleased about the muffins! It was a great first stop :)

We continued our journey to our next waterfall we walked around ten minutes & came across a crater...it was huge....
....it was a long way down ....& our guide bought with him a huge rock and we put all of our bad energy into the rock and then you throw it in the crater....when it hit the water it made a load noise it really ecod we have never heard anything like it! And the water was 50 meters from where we were standing, then it was 80 meters deep and a further 50 meters deep in a diagonal direction! So that rock had a long way to travel! It was then onto the waterfall....
....this one was small but a lovely place to sit and relax

Luke went in and said it was absolutely freezing! As cold as the water in new zealand! So I opted out! My body just doesnt like the cold! Luke jumped in and had a swim and climbed up the waterfall a bit....
....luke jumping in

Now unfortunately my bikini bottoms broke here :( so I couldn't swim anywhere even if I wanted to ...now I wished I had swam in the first lake! We continued our journey we were on our way to get lunch...we had packed a packed lunch but decided to get some wedges to go with it and they were scrummy! Anyway on route to the cafe we stopped at a viewing point and had one of the best views we had had since we got in australia!...
....it was beautiful :)
....a huge stick insect!

We picked up lunch and headed to the next waterfall....the guide said that this may be one of the places that peter andres mysterious girl vid was shot! But he wasnt sure & I haven't seen the vid for years so couldnt tell you! Anyway we all sat down for lunch in front of this beautiful waterfall....
....absolutely stunning

It was a really beautiful waterfall, luke again said the water was freezing but he just jumped in! I enjoyed getting some good snaps of him....
....luke freezing!

....luke at the bottom of the waterfall

After this we continued to our next and final stop which was "josephine falls" but on route we stopped at some tea fields and a fruit stall which sold fruit grown on the owners own ground and it was really tasty....we got 5 bananas for $1 ! And there was no one manning it there was just the fruit there and a honesty box!

We got to the final stop & after a short walk in the rainforest we got to Josephine falls....

It was lovely and there was a natural water slide there! It was here that i wished my bikini bottom hadnt broke! It looked very fun here and I missed out :( but I enjoyed watching luke :) the current was really strong and it was a little dangerous so I'm not sure if my bikni bottoms breaking was fate because i dont know if I would have coped with the current and also climbing up the rock to get to the slide it would be my luck I would have a accident! There was this poor canadian girl travelling alone who attempted to climb the rock and sliped and fell on her face :( she cut her head and a lump the size of a tennis ball came up on her forehead :( I felt so sorry for her and she was flying the next day to new zealand, we also saw another guy cut his head open where the current had taken him so fast into a rock, there were signs everywhere saying it was dangerous & our guide said it was dangerous & carried a rope and floating device, so I dont think its a bad thing I didn't go in! But luke had a great time he dived in climbed up the wall and enjoyed going down the slide many times! ....
....luke on the slide

The water in this waterfall was fresh spring water and our guide said we could drink it ! So we filled our bottles up and it was so tasty nicer then the water coming out the taps in our hostel! We took a wonder up to the top of the fall....
....it was a great end to a great day :)

We headed back to the group and had afternoon tea....we got biscuits, cake, fruit it was lovely :) we gad a group photo and then it was time to leave :( we had a hour drive back and by the time we got back it was 19.30! We had quite litrally had a full day tour and had really enjoyed it :) I will be writing a outstanding review on this tour :) we got to see some really beautiful spots in the tablelands and it was a breath of fresh air for us as we were begining to be fed up with oz! But we had a great day :) this is deinately the tour to do in cairns......"captain mattys atherton tablelands tour"
